The capital of Indonesia will be moved from Jakarta, Java, to the island of Borneo, to the province of Eastern Borneo – the president of Indonesia Joko Widodo officially informed. The process of moving the capital could be completed in 5-10 years. According to Widodo, the operation of relocating the capital is expected to cost 466 trillion Indonesian rupees (about USD 33 billion). 19% this amount is to be covered by the state, and the rest will be financed on the basis of private-public partnership and thanks to private investment.
As explained by the president, the analysis showed that the „most ideal place for a new capital” is the region consisting of the Eastern Borneo districts – Penajam Paser Utara and Kutai Kartanegara. They are on the east coast of the island. The new capital, which has not yet been named, could therefore arise near the existing cities of Samarinda and the port of Balikpapan – Reuters said.
Reasons for moving the capital
The Kyodo agency emphasizes that Widodo, the president and head of government of Indonesia, plans to move the capital within 5-10 years. The decision follows, among others from statistics that in 2013 showed that massive traffic and traffic jams on the streets of Jakarta cause annual losses of 56 billion rupees (about $ 4 billion).
In addition, the area under the current capital collapses under the weight of the structure, the foundations are weakened by water, and the level of the Java Sea is rising. According to environmental experts, in 2050 a third of Jakarta may be under water. The north most threatened is the city, where entire districts along the coast are already flooded.
There is also environmental pollution and seismic hazards. Jakarta will probably remain the economic center of the country. It is the second agglomeration after Tokyo, inhabited by almost 32 million people. The whole island of Java, having an area of 126.7 thousand. square kilometers, has a population of 130 million people.
Borneo is the third largest island in the world after Greenland and New Guinea, with an area of 743.3 thousand. square km. Less than 16 million people live there. Only the southern part of Borneo belongs to Indonesia. The northern areas of the island belong to Malaysia and Brunei
