On August 17th the Republic of Indonesia celebrates National Day.
The date of the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence was made a public holiday by a government decree issued on 18 June 1946.
On that day, the leaders of the national liberation movement, the later president of Sukarno, and Mohammad Hatta, who became vice-president, proclaimed the country’s independence.
