General information about the economy
The economic situation is determined by profits from rich oil and gas fields. Oil-bearing areas occur mainly in Sumatra, Java, Irian Jaya. Oil is also extracted from the seabed. There is hard coal in Sumatra. Other natural resources include: bauxite, tin, nickel, sulfur, copper, manganese.
Over 20% of the population is employed in the industry. The main industrial centers are located in Java. The Southeast Asian region includes: Brunei, Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Island Indonesia (1.919 million km2 and 207 million inhabitants) dominates in terms of territory and population. Geographical, climatic, cultural-civilizational and historical factors have enabled the development of special ties between communities living in the region, based primarily on the consideration and tolerance of diversity, essentially differently than in North-East Asia.
